These Shoes

from The Ego Has Landed by Phil Nice

about

This song has been knocking around on the back catalogue since 2002 and a rough version on an early demo album "Postcard to The Moon" which I put out on mymusic.dk back in the day. I've often wondered what it really means, and whether it means something different now to when I wrote it. Back then, I envisaged an old man - my future self - leaving the rat race and taking it easy, tired but wiser. Now I see it as a young man putting away childish things and coming of age. A curious irony is that I had, and still have never, set foot in any of the locations mentioned in the song, save for one, Oslo. It's a metaphor, you see.....

Trivia: Features my first home built guitarfrom 2013, the fretless. A real cry baby. Unruly, hard to play, and now scrapped for a new model, but what a charmer!

lyrics

They walked the streets of Paris
Kicked up the dust in Rome
And through the northern winter
They braved the rain and snow
These shoes have danced their final
Shuffle, tap and step
They’re about as sorry as a pair of shoes can get

Their eyes are full of water
Their tongues are hanging out
Their soles are paper thin
They yawn, they smile, they pout
These shoes have seen the last of
Puddles, mud and grit
It’s time for us to call it quits

They cooled their heels in Oslo
Kicked up a fuss in Bonn
And two Aegean summers
They stretched out in the sun
These shoes have stomped their final
Rhythm on the stage
The world demanded dues
And these shoes have paid

They were with me at my marriage
They saw my daughter born
They walked with me through hardship
Through countless ups and downs
If shoes could talk I know they’d
Tell a sorry tale
Of life at pavement height
Of bugs and slugs and snails
